Manchester City send young midfielder Echeverri on loan to Bayer Leverkusen

Date:

Bayer Leverkusen have finalised a deal to take Manchester City’s Claudio Echeverri on loan for the 2025-26 season.

The 19-year-old midfielder, regarded as one of Argentina’s brightest prospects, will link up with Erik ten Hag’s side in Germany as he continues his development away from the Etihad.

Echeverri featured three times for City last season, including his senior debut off the bench in the FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace. He also registered his first goal for the club during the 6-0 win against Al-Ain at the Club World Cup in June.

City originally signed the teenager from River Plate in January 2024 for ÂŁ12.5 million, but Pep Guardiola and his staff have opted to send him out on loan to gain more regular first-team football.

Guardiola open to more departures

Echeverri’s exit may not be the last piece of outgoing business at City before the transfer deadline on 1 September. Guardiola, who has consistently stressed the need for a leaner squad, recently explained: “Leaving players out is not healthy. I cannot create a good atmosphere to compete.”

Tottenham have been in negotiations with City over Brazilian winger Savinho, though reports suggest Premier League champions are reluctant to sell unless an attractive bid is received.

Goalkeeper Ederson has also been strongly linked with Turkish champions Galatasaray. The 32-year-old was absent from City’s opening-day victory against Wolves due to illness, but speculation over his future remains.

Galatasaray are also believed to have enquired about Swiss defender Manuel Akanji. However, any deal would depend on both a suitable offer and the player’s willingness to leave Manchester.

Meanwhile, Championship newcomers Wrexham are on the verge of completing a significant deal to sign young City defender Callum Doyle in a move worth up to ÂŁ8m.

The summer transfer window shuts at 19:00 BST on Monday, 1 September, and City are expected to remain active both in terms of departures and potential reinforcements.
