A date has been set for Rashee Rice’s disciplinary hearing
A disciplinary hearing for Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice is scheduled for September 30th in New York, according to sources who spoke to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Sue L. Robinson, a former U.S. district judge who was jointly appointed by the NFL and NFL Players’ Association as the league’s disciplinary officer, is currently slated to hear the case.
With his hearing scheduled for late September, Rashee Rice is expected to be available for the Chiefs’ first four games before facing any potential discipline for his role in a multicar crash last season that left multiple people hurt. Rice, who pleaded guilty to two third-degree felony charges in a district court, could have his legal case dismissed if he is able to complete the mandatory five-year probation he was sentenced to for the crash.
“All I can do is focus on what I can control right now, and that’s me doing what I do best right here on the field,” Rice said earlier this month. “I learned just how valuable any opportunity and moment is. This right here, us being able to be on the field and be coached by Coach Reid and have such a great quarterback, is honestly a gift, a blessing. I’ve completely changed. Honestly, you have to learn from things like that. I’ve taken advantage of being able to learn from something like that.”
No QB decisions for the Browns, Giants, or Saints
Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski didn’t say who would be the team’s starting quarterback in their preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles, but he confirmed it would not be Joe Flacco, according to NFL.com. He also said that it’s too early to tell if rookie Dillon Gabriel will be healthy enough to play this weekend as he continues to battle a hamstring injury. The only fully healthy quarterback on the roster currently is Snoop Huntley, who signed with the team on August 5th.
Though they don’t have nearly as many injuries, the New York Giants also haven’t made a decision regarding their starter under center for this weekend’s preseason game. Head coach Brian Daboll said he is hoping to make that decision after the team’s walkthrough today.
Lastly, New Orleans head coach Kellen Moore told reporters that he is still undecided as to who would be the Saints’ starting QB against the Jaguars on Sunday. Spencer Rattler was the starter in the team’s first preseason game.
Former All-Pro Guard Brandon Scherff calls it quits
Five-time Pro Bowler Brandon Scherff announced he is retiring from the NFL after spending ten seasons in the league. Drafted with the fifth overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, Scherff spent the first part of his career with the Washington Commanders before joining the Jacksonville Jaguars in the off-season of 2022, where he remained.
“It’s been something I could never dream of,” he said. “Sometimes I would tell my wife that she has to pinch me, because I’m playing a kid’s game, and being able to do it as a job is pretty amazing. Now, having kids and being able to see them after games is absolutely wonderful. So I would say it’s a dream come true. And I will be forever grateful to have had that chance.”
Ravens and Commanders cancel joint practice
In a somewhat surprising move, the Washington Commanders and the Baltimore Ravens have mutually agreed to cancel their joint practice scheduled for August 21st. The Ravens cited “logistical challenges” as the reason for the cancellation.
“Recognizing the logistical challenges – with our teams’ previous games scheduled on different days – and the added strain on players heading into a short week, the Ravens and Commanders mutually agreed to no longer hold a joint practice next week,” the Ravens said in a statement released this morning. “Instead, we will concentrate on preparing for our upcoming preseason matchup.”
“Sometimes, schedules don’t sync up,” Commanders head coach Dan Quinn told reporters before today’s practice. “I visited with John (Harbaugh) last night, and he’s always choosing the best choices for players. So, every once in a while, it just doesn’t sync up. We’re bummed; we got a lot of respect for them and were looking forward to it, but we’ll get to see them a couple days after that.”
A new defensive back in the ATL
Cornerback C.J. Henderson is signing a deal with the Atlanta Falcons, pending the results of his physical. The former ninth-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft has spent the last two seasons with the Carolina Panthers. Last year, he recorded 39 total tackles and two pass deflections in 12 games.
The Chargers, Cowboys, Vikings, and Steelers name their starting QBs for this week
Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh said that Justin Herbert will be the team’s starting quarterback against the Rams. He added that Khalil Mack and Derwin James are the only starters who won’t play in the game.
Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer announced that Joe Milton III will start at quarterback against the Baltimore Ravens. Also, first-round draft pick Tyler Booker is expected to make his NFL preseason debut.
After starting in their first preseason game, quarterback J.J. McCarthy will not play in the Minnesota Vikings’ matchup this weekend against the Patriots. Instead, Sam Howell will be the starting quarterback on Saturday.
Once again, Aaron Rodgers will not take the field for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and it will be Mason Rudolph who will be the starting quarterback for the black and gold. Additionally, head coach Mike Tomlin said the players who sat last week will not play once again this week.
