Xabi Alonso says ‘now not the time’ to discuss future as Real Madrid eye Bayer Leverkusen boss

Date:

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has chosen to sidestep speculation regarding a potential move to Real Madrid, insisting the focus must remain on the season’s final stretch.

The 43-year-old Spaniard is among the names reportedly being considered as a replacement should Carlo Ancelotti depart the Bernabeu this summer.

Alonso’s impressive tenure at Leverkusen — which includes guiding them to an undefeated Bundesliga title and a German Cup win in his first full season – has made him a hot managerial prospect across Europe.

Despite the mounting rumours, Alonso remained tight-lipped when asked about his future during his latest press conference.

“It’s not a good time to discuss the future. We’re at a very important moment in the season.

“I don’t want to talk about speculation and rumours. [I understand] that this is happening, but what’s more important to me is what’s happening right now.”

Currently, Leverkusen trail Bayern Munich by six points with just five games remaining in the Bundesliga campaign, leaving no room for distractions as they push for another strong finish and back-to-back titles.

Club CEO Fernando Carro also weighed in on the rumours about a Madrid move, adding that Alonso feels “comfortable” at the club and is already involved in planning for next season.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp – another manager linked with Real Madrid – appears unlikely to return to the sidelines any time soon. His agent, Marc Kosicke, told Sky Germany on Friday: “Jurgen is very happy with his new role as head of global soccer at Red Bull.”

As for Alonso, this isn’t the first time he’s been connected with top clubs. Last year, he was linked with managerial vacancies at Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Bayern Munich.

A decorated player in his own right, Alonso enjoyed a stellar six-year run with Real Madrid between 2009 and 2014, winning both La Liga and the Champions League.

He ended his playing days at Bayern Munich in 2017 before making the transition to coaching.
